Serie A Preview: Juventus vs AC Milan

Posted by admin On December - 13 - 2008ADD COMMENTS

The encounters between Juventus and AC Milan have always been a classic—a fixture between two of the world’s most successful clubs. On Sunday, two living legends symbolizing their respective clubs will go head to head as the Bianconeri entertain the Rossoneri in a crucial showdown at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin.

Both sides won their respective game last week and currently share second place with 30 points, six shy of Inter. Juventus has returned to winning ways after their hiccough against Inter, but AC Milan have yet to recover from their defeat at the hands of Palermo and the exit from the Coppa Italia.

Another interesting aspect of Sunday’s fixture is the number of Rossoneri players such as Zambrotta, Abbiati, Inzaghi, Emerson and Ancelotti, who are all coming face to face with their former club.

The outcome of this game could very well decide which team keeps pace with table-topping Inter as the losing side would seriously damage their Scudetto chances.

Juventus – Bate 11/25/2008

Giovinco sorry but still confident

Posted by admin On December - 12 - 2008ADD COMMENTS

Sebastian Giovinco failed to score from the spot in Juventus’ 0-0 draw with BATE in the Champions League earlier tonight.

Juventus came into to their final match with BATE knowing that they had already qualified for the next phase of the competition. Having said this though, anything but a defeat would ensure them of top spot in the group, ahead of the Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Their clash with BATE was at home, and so the Bianconeri were more than confident of achieving this. It ended 0-0 however, as neither side managed to break the other down.

The home side certainly had the better of the chances throughout the contest, most notably a penalty that they were awarded early in the second half.

With Alessandro Del Piero on the bench, the club’s young starlet Sebastian Giovinco stepped up to take the kick, only to see it fly over the bar, and deny his side a victory in the process.

Following the match, Giovinco apologized for his penalty miss, and made some comments on the performance of his side tonight.

“It’s a shame, but if I get the chance again then I will take the penalty. We all train and then decide on the penalty taker. The usual takers were out, so it fell to me,” Giovinco said after the match.

“I really do apologize to my team mates and to the fans, but I promise I will try again,” declared a smiling Giovinco in an interview with Sky.

“Thankfully the miss didn’t cost us top spot in the group, and so we are still happy with our performance despite the draw.

“We were not at our best tonight, however that’s because BATE did not allow us to do so,” he added.

“Now we turn our attention to Milan, and hopefully we can bounce back and win that match this weekend,” he concluded.

Juventus and Milan to battle at the Olimpico in Turin this Sunday, with play getting underway at 20:30 CET.

Juventus draws 0-0 with BATE

Juventus was held to a 0-0 draw by BATE Borisov on Wednesday, getting the one point it needed to finish on top of Group H in the Champions League.

Sebastiano Giovinco, making a rare start for Juventus, shot over the crossbar on a penalty in the 53rd minute after BATE’s Mikhail Sivakov had been called for a hand ball in the area. Giovinco had scored a spectacular free kick goal over the weekend in the Serie A.

Two minutes before the penalty, Juventus midfielder Marco Marchionni hit the post with a header.

“For us the most important thing was to get the one point and that is what we did, but we did try to win,” Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie said. “We hit the post and missed a penalty so we did come close. Sometimes these games that on paper don’t seem that difficult turn out to be very hard. We managed this game very well.”

BATE, which won the Belarus championship in November, created few chances and rarely threatened the goal. The best opportunity to score came in the 56th when Vitaly Rodionov’s weak header flew high over the net as BATE made little improvement over its Champions League low of just 11 shots on goal in the first five games.

Juventus finished the group stage with 12 points, the same as Real Madrid. Juventus finished first because it has a better head-to-head record. Zenit St. Petersburg finished with five points and BATE three.

Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero, who scored three of his team’s four goals against Madrid, came on in the second half but was unable to provide the spark that would have led to a goal. Del Piero did come close to scoring in the 81st, forcing BATE goalkeeper Sergei Veremko to make a diving save on his header.

Giovinco got the start so that Del Piero could rest a slight injury and to ensure he is rested for Sunday’s match against Serie A rival AC Milan.

“Giovinco played well and with personality,” Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri said. “I’m sorry he missed the penalty, but that happens to everybody. He made a lot of good pass and created chances. We came close to scoring and the most important thing was not to get scored on.”

The BATE defense neutralized Juventus striker Amauri, who scored the winner in the final minute against Lecce over the weekend. Amauri is tied for fourth in Serie A with eight goals through 15 games.

Juventus midfielder Cristiano Zanetti played for the first time this season after missing the first three months with an injury. Vincenzo Iaquinta, who scored two goals against BATE in September’s 2-2 draw, was left off the roster due to injury. Midfielder Mauro Camoranesi also sat out the game with a collar bone injury.

Giovinco: “Happy to have scored”

Posted by admin On December - 11 - 2008ADD COMMENTS

Three days ago, by means of an interview during Filo Diretto on Juventus Channel, Sebastian Giovinco had said that he hoped that one day he would be the captain. In Lecce he was. Even though he did not have the skipper’s band round his arm he managed to imitate Del Piero excellently scoring from a magnificent free-kick.

The comparison at the end of the match was obvious: “I have only to learn from Del Piero and all my other team-mates. Today I had the occasion and I am happy to have scored and for the victory obtained by Juventus. We knew it would be a difficult match even when one considers all our injured players.”

Which is the best option for Seba right now?

  • Stay at Juventus (66%)
  • Go on loan again (10%)
  • Move to a Serie A mid-table team (9%)
  • Move aboard (11%)
  • Retire!! (4%)
