Giovinco strike downs Juventus

Juventus’s hopes of securing European football next season were ended after they were beaten 1-0 by Parma at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

Sebastian Giovinco scored a rocket of a strike against his parent club to end any hopes of the Bianconeri reaching next season’s Europa League.

The defeat leaves Juve four points behind sixth-placed Roma, who drew at Catania, with one game left to play. The three points were more than enough to see Parma mathematically safe from relegation.

Giovinco came close to opening the scoring after six minutes when his in-swinging corner was dummied by Valeri Bojinov, and Gianluigi Bufon had to react quickly to claw the ball away just as it was crossing the line.

Buffon then parried Giovinco’s strike after the diminutive attacker was played through by Blerim Dzemaili, whose follow-up effort was blocked en route to goal.

Alesandro Matri glanced a header wide from a cross for Juve before Felipe Melo’s solid strike from range was tipped over the bar by Parma keeper Antonio Mirante to ensure an open first half ended goalless.

After the break it was Juventus who looked more like scoring, with Mirante saving well from Alessandro del Piero’s free-kick and then again from Jorge Martinez’s close-range effort.

But after the visitors failed to make the most of their good spell, it was left to Giovinco to once again show them what they were missing.

The diminutive attacker, on loan at Parma for the season from Juve, brought the ball forward and was allowed to cut inside and unleash a stunning strike which flew past Buffon and into the far top corner.

It was Giovinco’s seventh league goal of the season and his third against Juve following his brace in the 4-1 win in Turin back in January.

Juve manager Luigi del Neri brought on Luca Toni as he searched for a goal, but the big striker headed wide in injury time and the points went to Parma.

Italy boss Prandelli impressed by Parma playmaker Giovinco

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli was delighted with the form of Parma midfielder Sebastian Giovinco during international week.

The on-loan Juventus playmaker shone in victory over Ukraine.

“Paradoxically I had more answers from the Ukraine game than against Slovenia, because it’s difficult to find a balance when you can change eight players,” said Prandelli.

“We had therefore focused on three aspects: organisation, aggression in midfield and breaking forward. I saw all those, despite the difficulties.

“If I have to name one player who impressed me, I’d say Giovinco: tenacious, effective, he was never afraid of the tackle and showed great vision for the goal.”
